She spends as much of her time off traveling as possible and enjoys photography. When at home she spends time with her cat. Her favorite TV show is This Is Us and her favorite sport is hockey. When asked to choose her favorite thing about Loyola she responded: “Hard to choose a single favorite! I love Loyola's collaborative environment, its prominent social media presence, and its reputation for being innovative (i.e. Hallway Path Quiz, PathElective). Because Loyola is a transplant center, we get to see a wide variety of cases. Ultimately, if I have to pick a favorite, it would be supportive co-residents and attending physicians. I feel we have a family vibe here at Loyola. Residents hang out outside of work (i.e. game nights, improv workshop, Whirlyball), and attendings are there for you if you need to talk or have questions.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Does the program follow a sub-specialty or general sign-out model? Sub-specialty sign-out. At Hines VA, we get exposure to general sign-out. How is the surgical pathology rotation organized? Our surgical pathology rotation is organized into 4 weeks. We are assigned a different subspecialty per week, and one week of frozens. In the case of dermatopathology, the rotation is organized into 4 separate weeks. How is the grossing organized? We are assigned to gross specimens (1-2 x/week) related to our weekly sub-specialty, for example: gynecology service will gross uterus, ovaries etc. However, you can request to gross cases not related to your sub-specialty too. How are the anatomical pathology and clinical pathology rotation organized throughout residency? We try to alternated the rotations on a monthly basis.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Kontosis - Andreas Kontosis, MD</image:title>
<image:caption>is our Chief Resident. He joins us from from Kavala, a city in the northern region of Greece and is a graduate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Medical School. His interests in pathology include GI, molecular pathology and hematopathology. Outside the Pathology Universe, he enjoys reading books (history, classic literature, fiction), cooking Mediterranean meals and spending time with friends and family. His favorite books are “The magic mountain” by Thomas Mann and the “The Alexandria Quartet” by Lawrence Durrell. His favorite TV shows include Community, Mr. Robot, Game of Thrones (except for the last season) and of course House MD. His favorite movies are the Lord of the Rings trilogy. On why he chose Loyola: “Before my interview, I knew that Loyola provides excellent training in both AP and CP with exposure to unique areas of pathology such as transplant pathology. During the interview, I was captivated by the great camaraderie between the residents, the friendly attendings and the welcoming environment of the program. This special and unique combination was the reason I chose Loyola. Did I mention the opportunity to live in the iconic city of Chicago? If not, here is my third reason!”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Friend is another one of our globe-trotting residents. She took the scenic route, all the way from her hometown of Chiang Mai, Thailand, to Bryn Mawr College of Pennsylvania for her undergraduate degree in Biology, to Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poland, and finally to here at Loyola Pathology Residency Program. Friend is still "undifferentiated" in her interests and enjoys all of her rotations so far inlcuding, but not limited to, transfusion medicine, hematopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, and cytology. Outside of pathology, Friend is a casual artist who dabbles in all types of medium. She enjoys making the most out of her weekends exploring Chicago, particularly the robust food scene that the city has to offer. She's a new cat mom to two Bengal cats and will take advice from any veteran cat parents. Her favorite movie is "Mad Max: Fury Road" and her current favorite TV show is Schitt's Creek. On why she chose Loyola: "It really came down to the people here. I had so much fun with the attendings and residents during my online rotation last year, I knew that this program was the perfect fit for me. Chicago is also THE place to be if you're looking for a city with lots of activities, world-class cuisine, and breathtaking architecture."</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rivera - John-Luke Rivera, MD</image:title>
<image:caption>A native of Central California, John-Luke Rivera was exposed to the world of Pathology very early on by his mother, a clinical laboratory scientist. When he wasn't horsing around the playground with the other kids, the young John-Luke would be swabbing it for fomites to incubate and view behind the lenses of a microscope - such was his budding fascination with the microbial world. His childhood would influence him to major in Microbiology at the University of California, Davis for undergrad and eventually move to the Chicagoland area to pursue his medical degree at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. On why he chose to continue his training at his alma mater for residency: "Rotating and interviewing at other pathology programs as part of the Match cycle was very eye-opening to me, as until then, it was really hard to appreciate just how special my lived experience at Loyola was without having other points of comparison. Loyola delivers a strong balance of renowned faculty, fellowship opportunities, up-to-date facilities, as well as case type and volume. What ultimately drove my decision though was the gut feeling that giving up the amazing mentorship and community I already had at Loyola Pathology to train somewhere else would have been the worst move I could possibly make." John-Luke's subspeciality interests include forensics, surgical pathology, and (of course) microbiology. Outside of pathology, he enjoys a number of hobbies - including but not limited to: adventure eating, sartorialism, invertebrate husbandry (especially of Theraphosidae species), collaborating virtually with others in real time utilizing a block-based architecture simulation program, short film, Japanese print, and animated media, as well as cheesy and over-the-top television dramas of all languages.</image:caption>

He is open to all pathology specialties but especially: hematopathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, molecular, and anatomic pathology. When not studying he enjoys reading, working out, and hanging with family/fiancée. He really does love reading and he singlehandedly put together our department book club! A interesting fact about Adam is that he worked in a cheese shop in high school and he likes to dabble in cheese-making! His favorite sport is basketball. When asked why Loyola, he said that: “For me it was the great work life balance that the program promotes along with the amazing faculty and coresidents. I felt this was the place where I would be challenged to grow both as a pathologist and as a human”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Koster - Hunter Koster, MD</image:title>
<image:caption>Born and raised in West Michigan near Grand Rapids, Hunteris a graduate of American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine located in St. Maarten. His interests in pathology are rather diverse such as Forensics, Dermatopathology, Surgical Pathology, or Blood Bank. He is excited to see where residency will take him, and which field he will ultimately end up in! His interests outside of work involve watching horror movies, EDM concerts, baking, spending time with family/nieces, wine tasting, taking care of his axolotls, attending sporting events, hanging out with friends, reading, and travelling (mainly Central and South America so far). Why he picked Loyola: “Loyola was hands down one of my favorite interviews during my interview season. They made me feel like an individual during the process rather than just another number for them to interview. I took their PathElective course during my 4th year where I was able to interact more with the residents and attendings which further enhanced my fondness of the program. The program really focuses on making sure you know the fundamentals and build on your understanding while supporting you along the way. Outside of work, I knew I wanted to end up in a place like Chicago. It is a city filled with immense diversity of interests, culture, and opportunities. Chicago is a place where not only you can prosper personally but also professionally”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rachel attended medical school at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, with rotations at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva and EMMS hospital in Nazareth. Along the way she had wonderful teachers, who inspired her to consider almost every area of medicine. She ultimately landed in pathology, where every day is challenging and interesting, and she gets to keep in touch with all branches of medicine and surgery. Her sub-specialty interests in pathology include hematopathology and transfusion medicine. “Loyola is a great place to train - there is a cheerful environment, where we have fun while being dedicated and serious physicians who care for the surrounding community. There is a sense of camaraderie among the residents, in addition to strong collaboration with our PAs, laboratory scientists, and clinical teams of other departments. The faculty here are talented teachers and great mentors. Outside of work, I love to read, learn new languages, cook new recipes with my family, and spend time outdoors hiking and biking”</image:caption>

She really enjoys cooking interesting meals (ask for her zucchini bread recipe!) and gardening. As an avid book reader, Leah is already a devoted member of our department’s book club. Leah chose Loyola because “the learning environment here seemed really supportive, and there was a strong emphasis on not just being amazing pathologists, but also the importance of being a well-rounded and balanced human outside of medicine. She is a graduate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Erie Campus. Madelyn is open to all pathology subspecialties; her current favorites are forensics, breast and gynecologic pathology. When not at Loyola, you can find Madelyn hanging out with her cute dog, Jojo, participating in long-distance running workouts (usually with her athletic dog!) and reading. She is an ardent fan of Chapell Roan and has converted many residents to become fans of the “Midwest princess”. Her favorite TV show is Love Island. Madelyn chose Loyola “due to the resident culture, as it seemed like everyone was super friendly and bounced off of one another during the resident interview session. I wanted a program where I would be not only coworkers but also good friends with my co-residents. The faculty also seemed very welcoming and supportive, and Loyola seemed like a place where I could feel comfortable to learn, while also being challenged to become a strong pathologist. I also liked that the program supports a healthy work-life balance. Finally, I really liked the Chicagoland location as I have a lot of family in the area, and I was looking to move out of Pittsburgh and explore what a larger city has to offer. So far, I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone in the department and have felt very well-supported in the learning process throughout the first month or so of residency, so I feel that I made a great choice in coming here!”</image:caption>

Outside of the lab, Nolan and his wife Elizabeth enjoy a broad “side-hustle” in music arrangement and performance at low-pressure venues in the Chicagoland area. On their ideal weekend, they would be found at a Symphony Center or Lyric Opera matinée. On why he chose Loyola: “Loyola was the closest thing I had to a home program, and I rotated here multiple times in medical school. I was struck by the encouraging mentorship of the faculty, the collegial relationship among the residents, and the overall open and supportive environment of the program. Natasha has not sharpened her focus on a particular subspecialty, but she is excited to continue expanding her knowledge in the various areas of pathology. Other than being a budding pathologist, she is a proud Capricorn and lover of poetry, calligraphy, and black clothing. In her spare time, you can find her playing basketball, kickboxing, or enjoying authentic Jamaican cuisine. If she had to pick one word to explain why she chose Loyola, it would be “vibes”. On her interview day, the energy coming from both program leadership and residents gave her confidence that her training would be nurtured in a warm, welcoming environment</image:caption>

      <image:title>Rangan - Pallavi Rangan, MBBS</image:title>
<image:caption>Pallavi decided to stay at Loyola University Medical Center after completing her Hematopathology fellowship because the program’s mentorship, collegial atmosphere, and proximity to friends made it the ideal place to grow her roots. Having first trained in pathology in India, she is working toward a career in Hematopathology that blends patient care and teaching, while fostering strong professional collaborations. Outside of work, Pallavi dotes on her German Shepherd, Czar, and spends hours tending to her jungle of aroids and hope to turn her home into a conservatory someday (Read: Monstera Mom)"</image:caption>
