Carolina Quiroz Moreyra, MD
Carolina was born in Lima, Peru but was raised in the state of Maryland where she also completed her medical education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore (go Ravens!). She is currently interested in genitourinary pathology and cytopathology, with hopes to apply her knowledge in cytology globally to provide services in countries that have few pathologists such as her home country Peru. However, blood banking and transfusion medicine has captured her attention as it can be another patient facing area of pathology.
Outside of work, Carolina enjoys playing with her shiba inu, Yuca, watching true crime documentaries, doing many jigsaw puzzles, going to Cubs games, and mentoring pre-medical and medical students (we need more future pathologists!)
On why she chose Loyola: “Some of my biggest passions are on medical education, mentorship, and community outreach. On interview day, one of the first topics introduced to applicants was the many community service events run by the pathology department and all the teaching opportunities to impact students from high school to medical school education. I also do love seeing patients and like that I can get that in Loyola both during cytopathology and in transfusion medicine by running the apheresis clinic which is not seen in all programs. All the faculty interviewers were extremely lovely and easy to talk to (and now I have learned are also incredible teachers!). Lastly, the residents!! I felt so comfortable asking them any and all questions which they welcomed with grace and good vibes. The department has definitely created a welcoming community and environment that feels safe to learn and grow in. Being so close to Chicago is always a plus too!”
